In 2018, I was diagnosed with Basal Cell Carcinoma on my shoulder. As a long-time lover of the warm California sun, I used to spend countless afternoons napping on the beach. I never thought I’d have to hang up my bikini so early but that diagnosis changed everything.
Since then, I’ve been committed to keeping my skin safe while still getting that golden glow. That means no more sunbathing—just sunless, organic tanning products. And trust me, when it was my turn to step in front of the camera for my own boudoir session, I knew I wasn’t about to show up pasty in January.
Whether you’re a natural glow-getter or a spray tan newbie, this blog covers the top 3 spray tan before boudoir shoot that I recommend to help you feel confident and camera-ready—plus how to apply them like a pro.
This is not a sponsored post—just my personal tried-and-true favs that can all be found on Amazon.

This one’s my go-to. The color is rich, golden, and builds beautifully with just one application. It also lasts longer than any other tanner I’ve used—usually about 5–7 days before I need a deep exfoliation.
It has a quick-drying formula and an instant bronzer, which helps you see exactly where you’ve applied it. While it has a stronger scent than the others, the results are totally worth it. I leave it on for as long as possible to develop max color.
Pro Tip: Don’t sleep in this one if you can avoid it, but if you do, use dark sheets and it’ll wash right out.
This is the best option if you’re short on time. I leave it on for 4–6 hours for a nice, natural glow. It has a subtle scent, a lightweight feel, and the built-in bronzer makes application foolproof.
Perfect for: Last-minute glow-ups when you want to look tan right now without going overboard making it a top spray tan before boudoir shoot.
This is a great gradual tanner, especially for fair skin. It’s bronzer-free, so it won’t stain your sheets, and the scent is light and pleasant. I usually apply two coats over two days for best results.
Ideal for: Winter skin or subtle color, especially if you’re new to sunless tanning.

If you’re using a self-tanner at home, this glove + exfoliation kit is essential. It includes:
An exfoliation mitt to prep your skin
An application mitt for even, streak-free coverage
It also protects your hands from stains—and it lasts forever.
DO NOT self-tan (for the first time) the night before your shoot. Always do a test run at least a few weeks ahead of time. If your tan turns patchy or orange, I won’t be able to Photoshop it out!

Here’s how to prep:
Exfoliate like crazy. Use a mitt and avoid moisturizing soaps. Don’t shave right before.
Apply lotion to knees, elbows, and ankles to prevent dark patches.
Use circular motions with your mitt to blend the product evenly. Take your time!
Let it dry fully. I throw on a loose, dark dress and chill around the house for a few hours.
Avoid water for 4–8 hours minimum. No dishes. No baby baths. No sweating.
Rinse with water only. Pat dry and avoid lotion or perfume right away.
When to tan: 1–2 days before your boudoir shoot for the perfect developed glow.
You can, but I usually don’t. Most face self-tanners fade fast with skincare routines. If you want to try, mix a bit of tanner with your daily moisturizer or use a tanner specifically made for your face.
Yes! Especially with a gradual tanner like Botanic Tree. You can use it selectively on lighter areas to even things out before your shoot.
If home tanning feels intimidating, opt for a professional handheld spray tan before boudoir shoot. Avoid automated booth sprays, they’re not as precise. A pro will customize the color and contour your body for flawless results.

Getting a tan before your boudoir session is a personal choice—but if it makes you feel sexy and glowy, I’m here for it. Whether you go with a self-tanner at home or book a spray tan artist, just test early and prep smart.
