What Happens During a Boudoir Session? A Step-by-Step Experience

a woman laying on a bed talking on a vintage phone on a consultation call finding out what happens during a boudoir session.

One of the first questions women ask when they reach out about a boudoir shoot is a simple one:

What happens during a boudoir session?

If you’ve never done anything like this before, it’s completely normal to feel curious, excited, and super nervous all at once. Most of my clients tell me they’ve been thinking about doing a session for months (sometimes even years) before finally reaching out.

The good news is that the experience is almost always more relaxed and enjoyable than people imagine.

My goal as your photographer is to guide you through every step of the process so you never feel awkward, unsure, or left wondering what to do next. From your very first consultation to the moment you see your finished images, everything is designed to help you feel comfortable, confident, and genuinely beautiful.

Here’s exactly what a boudoir session looks like when you work with me at OC Boudoir.

what happens during a boudoir session

Step One: The Consultation

Every session begins with a consultation call before anything is booked.

This is where we get to actually talk about your vision, your questions, your comfort level, and what you’re hoping to walk away with. We’ll go over wardrobe ideas, discuss the kinds of images you’re drawn to, and talk through the investment including the session fee and collection options.

My session fee is $500, which covers professional hair and makeup, access to the studio, and fully guided posing throughout your shoot. Image collections start at $1,500 and include options like luxury albums, wall art, folio boxes, retro image viewers and digital images.

If you’d like more detail on pricing before your consultation, you can read the full breakdown here: How Much Does Boudoir Photography Cost in Orange County?

Once you decide to move forward, your session date is secured with a signed agreement and paid session fee and your preparation officially begins.

Step Two: Prep and Planning

After booking, you’ll receive access to the OC Boudoir Client Lounge, a private resource with preparation guides, wardrobe suggestions, and everything you need to feel genuinely ready for your session day.

A lot of women worry about what to wear, especially if they don’t already own lingerie. The truth is that boudoir wardrobe is far more flexible than most people expect. My aesthetic leans toward a neutral palette with timeless, romantic pieces, think soft creams, classic black, sheer layers, and elegant robes but your session should ultimately reflect you, not a formula.

If wardrobe feels overwhelming, this guide will help: [What to Wear to a Boudoir Session (Even If You Don’t Own Lingerie)] and I always provide my Pinterest Board with a few pieces I personally love with links to purchase directly.

And don’t worry we will go over everything the day of your session too like, outfit order, which shoes to wear, etc.

What happens at a Boudoir Session? Step Three: Session Day

Session day is where everything comes together.

Most sessions begin around 9:30 in the morning at my studio location near Beach Boulevard and the 405 Freeway in Huntington Beach (unless it is a specialty shoot which could occur offsite). Parking is easy, the space is private and beautiful, and from the moment you walk in the door the day is designed to feel like an experience, not just a photo shoot.

We start with professional hair and makeup. This is intentional. Sitting in that chair while someone takes care of you is often the moment when nerves start to settle. You look in the mirror and something shifts. By the time hair and makeup are finished, most clients feel like a completely different version of themselves, in the best possible way.

Then we move into the shoot itself.

My style is timeless, artistic, and romantic. I use a soft neutral palette, thoughtful posing, and carefully chosen wardrobe pieces to create images that feel elegant and empowering! Creating portraits you’ll be genuinely proud of, not just photos you tolerate. Nothing here is rushed or formulaic. Every pose is demonstrated and guided step by step, so you always know exactly where to place your hands, how to angle your body, and what to do with your expression.

You don’t need modeling experience. You just need to show up.

The shoot itself is typically about an hour, and the full session day from arrival to wrap runs around three and a half hours. Most clients tell me they were so caught up in the experience that it went by faster than they expected.

Step Four: Your Image Reveal

About two weeks after your session, we meet again for your private image reveal which is held virtually over Zoom so you can experience it from wherever feels comfortable to you.

This is my favorite part of the entire process. You’ll see your finished images for the very first time, and the reactions are always incredible. Some women laugh. Some gasp. Some get emotional. Almost all of them say some version of the same thing.

“Wait, that’s really me?”

Yes. It is.

During your reveal appointment you’ll select your favorite images and decide how you want to enjoy them. Whether that’s a luxury album, wall art for your bedroom, a folio box, digital images, or a combination. The Real Transformation

A boudoir session is not just about photographs. It’s about doing something brave. Something that’s entirely for you. It’s about stepping in front of a camera, allowing yourself to be seen, and walking away with a completely new perspective on your own beauty and strength.

The images are the souvenir but he confidence is the gift and it is the most underrated part of what happens during a boudoir session.
