What to Wear to a Boudoir Session (Even if you don’t own Lingerie)

One of the biggest questions I hear from women before their shoot is this.

What do I wear to a boudoir session?

Most clients assume they need to have lingerie all figured out to even consider booking. In reality, many women arrive with just one or two pieces and some have never worn lingerie a day in their lives.

Knowing what to wear to a boudoir session is genuinely one of the least complicated parts of the experience, and I’ve built an entire wardrobe support process around making sure you feel completely prepared before you ever set foot in the studio.

Here’s everything you need to know.

You Don’t Have to Figure Out What to Wear to a Boudoir Session Alone

At OC Boudoir, wardrobe planning is part of the experience from the very beginning.

After you book your session, you’ll receive a curated Pinterest guide with links to some of my favorite styles, brands, and pieces across a range of budgets and aesthetics. You can shop from it, save ideas from it, or simply use it to get a feel for the kinds of looks that photograph beautifully.

Before your session date, we review your wardrobe together over email or text. You’ll know exactly what to bring, what I’ll have pulled and ready for you at the studio, and how we’ll create variety across your looks without overpacking.

At the studio I keep a selection of beautiful pieces including lace robes, accessories, shoes, fabric, and cozy sweaters, all available for you to use during your session. My aesthetic leans toward a soft neutral palette, timeless and romantic, so everything in the studio wardrobe photographs beautifully and pairs well with whatever you bring from home.

By the time you arrive on session day, there are no surprises. You already know your plan, and I’ve already got pieces pulled and ready for you.

Popular Wardrobe Options for Your Boudoir Session

Classic Lingerie Sets

A well-fitting bra and panty set is a classic choice for good reason. Lace, mesh, and soft textures all photograph beautifully, and high-waisted pieces can create a gorgeous, vintage-inspired silhouette. If you love lingerie, bring the pieces that make you feel most like yourself.

Fit matters far more than price. A simple set that fits perfectly will always photograph better than an elaborate piece that doesn’t feel comfortable. A few of my personal favorite pieces in the studio wardrobe are from Soreil Lingerie, a brand I love for their quality, elegance, and how beautifully their pieces photograph.

Oversized Sweaters and Button-Down Shirts

Some of the most intimate and naturally beautiful boudoir images come from relaxed, everyday pieces. An oversized sweater, a loose linen button-down, or even your partner’s shirt can create a soft and cozy feel that photographs in a completely different and equally stunning way than traditional lingerie.

These pieces are especially popular with clients who want something a little more modest while still creating images that feel sensual and feminine.

Robes and Layers

Robes are one of my favorite wardrobe pieces because they create movement and dimension in photos. A sheer lace robe layered over lingerie adds elegance and softness, while a silk robe worn on its own can create something more editorial and clean.

I keep several beautiful robes at the studio, so even if you don’t own one this is something we can incorporate into your session without any extra shopping on your part.

I had one client bring in her own Kimono that she wears around her house and it photographed beautifully!

Simple and Minimal Looks

Sometimes the simplest wardrobe choices produce the most powerful images when deciding what to wear to a boudoir session.

A white fitted bodysuit, a neutral bralette, or even soft draped fabric can create timeless portraits that feel artistic and refined. Many clients are genuinely surprised to find that their favorite images from the whole session came from the simplest look of the day.

What to Wear to a Boudoir Session: Colors That Photograph Beautifully

Since my studio aesthetic leans toward soft neutrals and a timeless palette, certain colors tend to work especially well.

Cream, ivory, champagne, and soft blush feel romantic and elegant on camera. Classic black is bold, flattering, and always a strong choice. Soft pastels, dusty rose, and muted lavender add a feminine and delicate quality that photographs beautifully in natural light. If you love color, deep jewel tones like emerald or burgundy can create striking, dramatic images.

The most important factor is always how a color makes you feel. Confidence photographs better than any specific shade.

The Wardrobe Review Makes All the Difference

One of the things clients tell me most often after their session is how relieved they were to have the wardrobe review beforehand. Knowing exactly what to wear to a boudoir session before you arrive removes one of the biggest anxiety points of the whole experience when planning what to wear to a boudoir session.

You won’t be standing in the studio unsure of what to put on next. We’ll already have a plan, the pieces will already be pulled, and all you’ll need to do is enjoy the day.
